Marine radios are more than a communication tool—they're your lifeline on the water. Along the NSW East Coast, Marine Rescue NSW maintains a network of VHF and PSN radio base stations monitoring emergency channels 24/7.
Radio Basics
- VHF Channel 16 – Distress, urgency, and safety calls. Always monitored.
- VHF Channel 71, 80 or 21 – Know your local channels, known as working channels used for non-emergency communications with Marine Rescue bases and other vessels.
- 27MHz Channel 88 – No longer monitored by Marine Rescue.
Always start with “Marine Rescue [base], this is [your vessel name], over.” Keep messages brief and clear. Call for a radio check before heading out.
